BiographyJohn Jeffrey Gibbens holds degrees in Composition and French Literature from Lawrence University and graduate degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Gibbens's teaching experience includes a semester as Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. Gibbens's research into connections between Claude Debussy and Charles Ives has been cited extensively by scholars. Publications include Burst for Snare Drum in Smith Publications's anthology The Noble Snare, and "Design in Ben Johnston's Sonata for Microtonal Piano," Interface, fall 1989. Gibbens is active as a free-lance piano accompanist, researcher, and archivist in Madison, Wisconsin. His interests include the music of architect Bruce Goff and centenarian Leo Ornstein, microtonal music, and American experimental music in general. A charter member of the Wisconsin Alliance of Composers, he serves currently on its board of directors.Principal worksPiano
