Jeffrey Phillips Burns

biographical ephemera:

Jeffrey Phillips Burns was born and reared in Saint Louis, Missouri (he is inordinately enamored of this inauspicious fortuity, we might add), and began composing at age eleven. He holds a Master's degree in music theory from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin, a Bachelor's degree in music from Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, Illinois, and an Advanced Computer Programming Certificate from Rock Valley College, Rockford, Illinois. He studied composition with Paul Steg and piano with Sylvia Reynolds, Ray Tadlock, J.B. Floyd (jazz), Mike Alongi (jazz), and Barbara Burns (his mother). He has performed jazz, rock, and classical (slightly) by himself and with such groups as Tazz Rikki, the Moonlight Jazz Orchestra, J.P. & the Cats, and the Burns-Rickert Set in six states and 71 cities. (This statistic seems to impress him. It may be that Chicago has far too many suburbs.) He teaches piano at The Madison School of Music and at Ward-Brodt Music. His Pentatonic Scales For the Jazz-Rock Keyboardist is published by Hal Leonard. He is a member of ASCAP.
